The Rule is Sleep - 08:04 CST, 10/07/26 (Sniper)

Inspired by "The Rule of St. Benedict", I created my own. I was planning to do this for fun on a weekend, but then to my surprise and joy it got assigned as part of my course work. "You mean I get college credit for something I was going to do in my free time anyway?"

I then had Copilot take what I had written up, and generate a poster from it which I can hang on my wall. Click on the below for the full-sized image:

The number one priority I identified as part of this process-- which is not represented on the poster, but it was in my original source document-- is not even spiritual: it is to finally solve my sleep, for real.

Three days ago I ate pasta for dinner. I exercised. I went to bed at 8:30pm. I woke up continously the entire night, and rated my sleep as an "F". I was borderline hallucinating on the drive in to work. Two days ago, I ate pasta again for dinner, exercised, went to bed at 8:30pm, and rated my sleep as an "A-", which is practically unheard of for me.

Yesterday I ate pasta, exercised, went to bed at 8:30pm, woke up continuously the entire night, and "for good" at about 2:00am. That is another "F", and I am barely able to think straight today.

I have not felt particularly stressed, so it's not that. I followed the exact same sleep hygiene and ate the same diets, so I don't think it's those. I blockaded the bottoms of my bedroom doors with clothes to make sure no mice ran in, so I know I wasn't getting woken up by rodents.

I bought an air purifier and am breathing much better, but am still waking up constantly-- so I don't think it's apnea, and besides that I essentially don't snore and have a healthy BMI.

My best guess at this point is that I am chemically dependent, to be able to sleep at all. I am on Trazodone, Melatonin, and Ambien CR. I think they "run out" of my system early in the morning, and then I wake up. A next step would be to wean myself off of the drugs, but that would mean basically not sleeping at all for a couple of weeks. So I would need to very carefully schedule that into my life.

My diet could use improvement, but I'm sensing that would simply "nibble around the edges" sort of like the air purifier did. There is a massive, core reason why I'm waking up. The good part is that, after fifteen-odd years of issues like this, I am finally tackling it head-on!

In any event, today is paper-writing day. Or more specifically, reading source material to be able to write the eventual paper. I also have my history class, and youth Faith Formation tonight at church.
